Challenge III

Welcome to Technique Tuesday Challenge III, Metronome! This new challenge is eight parts in duration and will be released weekly as part of Operation: Tap’s Technique Tuesday series. The twist for this challenge is that all of the participants will have to download a metronome to their smart phone and choose what tempo they want to perform the routine. The common perception is that the faster you dance the more challenging it is. Technique Tuesday Challenge III will debunk that theory and teach you the importance of control, command, evenness, and sound. I invite tap dancers of any age to participate in the challenge and I am happy today to share with all of you the rules and prizes for participation.

VOCABULARY LESSON

Before sharing the rules, let us take a moment to review some terms and vocabulary that you may not be familiar with. Reference these words when doing the challenge.

BPM: BPM is an abbreviation for, BEATS PER MINUTE. The BPM will be the number that you set your metronome at. For this challenge you will be allowed to choose a tempo between 80-100 BPM.

Time Signature: The amount and type of notes that each measure contains. For this challenge the time signature will be 4/4 time. Meaning there is 4 beats in one measure and the value of one beat is a quarter note. Make sure your metronome is set to 4/4 time.

RULES:

All submissions must have gone through this 3 STEP PROCESS to participate:

  • Go to the app store on your phone and download a metronome to your phone.
  • Go to operationtap.com and sign up for our free content. You will be emailed every tuesday when the new portion of the challenge is published.
  • Post your submission to the Operation: Tap Facebook page on March 1st, 2016.

Submissions must come in the form of a video. ONLY ONE DANCER PER SUBMISSION. Any submission that has more than one dancer will be disqualified from the contest.

The dancer in the submission must state their name, age, where they are from, and what BPM they are performing the routine. Any submission without a designated BPM will be disqualified from the contest.

The BPM on the metronome can be set between 80-100 BPM. Any submission that is set lower than 80 BPM or higher than 100 BPM will be disqualified from the contest.

All submissions must be performed in one take. EDITS of any kind in the film will result in disqualification from the contest.

Submissions will only be accepted on March 1st, 2016. Post your submission to the Operation: Tap Facebook page. You can post anytime on March 1st, 2016 within your time zone.

A referee may award points based on the following scenarios:

An instance in which the dancer performs a sound not only with technical accuracy but with shading, command, and mastery. The referee may award one bonus point.

An instance in which the referee is moved by the performance quality of the dancer will result in the awarding of one bonus point.

The referee will total the deductions and bonuses for each submission and submit their scores to Operation: Tap.

The highest and lowest scores will be thrown out and the five remaining scores will be tallied. The submission with the highest combined score will be crowned the CHAMPION!
